Excellence in Cities (EiC) Clusters
Clusters are designed to bring the Excellence in Cities programme to groups of schools in smaller deprived areas. There are two EiC Clusters in Croydon: the Croydon Cluster (started 2001) and the Personal Best Cluster (started 2003). They have a common focused programme designed to raise standards of achievement.
The programme has four strands:
- Improving curriculum provision for gifted and talented pupils and providing "Beyond School" opportunities to meet identified needs of gifted and talented pupils
- Removing the personal barriers to learning faced by some pupils. Learning mentors, in both primary and secondary schools, work with pupils, families and other agencies to coordinate a support programme for individuals.
- Providing learning support units in some schools to offer short-term intervention to pupils unable to function effectively in class. This programme aims to return pupils to the classroom or move them to appropriate specialist provision after intervention.
- The tailored strand focuses on encouraging good attendance in primaries of both clusters and secondaries in the Personal Best Cluster. Secondaries in the Croydon Cluster focus on reducing the impact of pupil turbulence.
The schools in the Clusters are committed to sharing the outcomes of their work with schools outside the group.
